Chip whisperer nano oscilloscopes

Hello,

I’m a security engineer, don’t have lots of experience in hardware but I’m curious to understand more about glitching and side channel attacks.
I just purchased a chip whisperer nano , waiting for it to arrive and my question is.
What kind of (budget)oscilloscope I can buy to be able to view capture traces from the glitch pin to be able to learn and understand what is happening and also use it for power analysis in side channel attacks, because as far as I understand that built-in oscilloscope is not in chip whisperer nano?.

Actually, CW-Nano does have a built-in oscilloscope (of sorts); it’s what captures power samples. It’s fairly limited compared to the rest of our CW lineup (see the comparison table here), and none of them are what one would consider a general-purpose oscilloscope, as they are designed and tuned specifically for side-channel attacks.

If you want to see the actual shape of the glitch then yeah you would need an external oscilloscope. You will also need, at a minimum, to solder some headers on your Nano in order to have something to connect your probe to. However this isn’t necessary for glitching attacks. It may feel nice to see the actual shape of a glitch, but it’s not necessary at all.

If you look at our set of Jupyter notebooks, you’ll see which notebooks can be done with the Nano. For example in fault101, there are two voltage glitching notebooks that are intended for the Nano. You don’t need an oscilloscope for these.
