STM32F303RDT6 - Accessing GPIO pins

I am currently working on a side-channel project that involves using a button on the STM32F303RDT6 processor via the GPIO functions. Based on a previous post here, I am looking to find where I can access the GPIO pins. I have a rev03 board and the schematic says that the GPIO pins are PA9, PA10, PA11, and PA12. However, when I try to use them nothing is being read for an input and nothing is being outputted either. It’s claimed that the GPIO functions can be accessed through the HAL but, I can’t seem to be able to. Any information about the specific addressing or HAL instructions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

Can you post the code that you’re using to access the pins?

Yes!

Hi,

I assume

/* GPIO Ports Clock Enable */
__HAL_RCC_GPIOA_CLK_ENABLE();

/*Configure GPIO pin Output Level */
HAL_GPIO_WritePin(GPIOA, GPIO_PIN_12, GPIO_PIN_RESET);

/*Configure GPIO pin : PA12 */
GPIO_InitStruct.Pin = GPIO_PIN_12;
GPIO_InitStruct.Mode = GPIO_MODE_OUTPUT_PP;
GPIO_InitStruct.Pull = GPIO_NOPULL;
GPIO_InitStruct.Speed = GPIO_SPEED_FREQ_LOW;
HAL_GPIO_Init(GPIOA, &GPIO_InitStruct);

/*Configure GPIO pins : PA11 */
GPIO_InitStruct.Pin = GPIO_PIN_11;
GPIO_InitStruct.Mode = GPIO_MODE_INPUT;
GPIO_InitStruct.Pull = GPIO_NOPULL;
HAL_GPIO_Init(GPIOA, &GPIO_InitStruct);

is what you’re using to setup the pins and that you’re using

while (1)
{
if(HAL_GPIO_ReadPin(GPIOA, GPIO_PIN_11) == 1){
HAL_Delay(500);
}
if(HAL_GPIO_ReadPin(GPIOA, GPIO_PIN_11) == 1){
HAL_GPIO_WritePin(GPIOA, GPIO_PIN_12, GPIO_PIN_SET);
} else{
HAL_GPIO_WritePin(GPIOA, GPIO_PIN_12, GPIO_PIN_RESET);
}

to read/write from the pins. I think that should work, though I don’t recommend using those pins, as they’re also used by the ChipWhisperer, so you might run into some conflicts there.

You may want to try using the LED pins as outputs instead.

Have you confirmed that both pins are/aren’t what you expect? Also can you confirm that your code is making it to that section?

BTW, you can use three backticks (the C is there for C syntax highlighting)
```C
CODE
```

for multiline formatted text.

Alex

Hey Alex!
Thank you for the advice! Switching to the LED pins and using them as inputs did exactly what I wanted. I am going to post the code that worked for me down below as well for others that also ran into this problem. Also thank you for the formatting suggestion I didn’t know that was how you notated multiline code.
